Some Art

Soo... Time to put up the long waited material for my textile art course. It's a long row of sketches for the final work. Only ideas, about the techniques and compositions. Nothing closed yet. Basically it's about combining images that depict the reality of north, to elements that symbolise the image the tourist industry wants to give of the north. The image would be printed and painted and the other elements could be sewn onto it, like multicoloured Christmas accessories... Or then there could be a board surrounding the image, composed of these kitchy elements. Well, it's on its way. There's one initial drawing of mine first, done according to photo taken from a book, and then some of the variations of it. The first drawing depicts a manly looking woman standing on her snow-covered yard. I chose that image since in north, women's traditional role is not to be women only, but 'good workers' as well as men are. Then, the second drawing depicts 'lonely men's working residency' that's also a phenomenon in north. The third and the last drawing depicts buthchering a home animal by your own hand, that's an everyday event in some northern families still. It also depicts the poverty of north, the family in the picture is of less wealth.

The compositions of the drawings will be changed for the final piece, for copyright reasons.

Here's the pictures (the sketches). If there's any ideas that come to your mind, they're all welcomed. Also critique, or even naming your favorite visual approach (1. 2. or 3. version for each). :)

Sketches were drawn in the size of A4 except the last for image 2 was drawn in the size of A3.

Hi again! Here's my fabulous work for the Flash course. Thought about trying to embed it inside my blog. Hope it works. Proceed with replacing your mouse on the bright green buttons, x-marks and round shaped arrows. It's only sort of structural basis for a portfolio, not any final one, will make lots of visual alterings still. But the idea remains, a sort of map of the land of my works... :)

If it does not show entirely, will change the banner sizes of the page after a while.

'Takaisin' means 'back'.
'Lue lisää' means 'Read more'.

Notion: Some of the background images in 'forms' section are taken from the internet, done by other artists. Can't recall the source, sorry.

Kitch versus Reality

Here's some of the latest ideas. Originally, had an idea about combining the theme introduced before, to another, that was about "modern shamanism" that's really my own invention. No more of that, discarded it the way it was and started to think about the role of old beliefs in the reality of north of today. Went to a conclusion to study travelling industry and the dreams it is offering to the tourists, of north, and contrast them to present reality of north. First collage is depicting that idea. Then, the second, is a little ironic viewpoint on the issue. Mainly they're concepts only and the aim is to combine kitch like elements to something that depicts local reality, be it photographs or drawings.

I'm dyeing to start to experiment with the techniques already, but guess that you have to do the brainstorming properly first...

Magical Landscape

Please, don't care about that thing below in the previous post... It's my first Flash button animation... Altho I'm greatly proud of it done.:P

So, back to the original issue. The textile art project. I know how tedious it is to read about someone's projects in the bloom, but maybe you've got mercy.

Here is one of the initial starting points. It's a fabric print that used as a starting point those magical dreams I used to have about Lapland before ever even visiting here... There's no human or animal figures in this one, running accross the fells, but some snow flake motives instead. The landscape is constructed of hand painted pieces of paper napkins and Serla toilet paper. I have to admit I had lots of fun making it.:P

Seems to come out pretty small again, but you can click the picture to enlarge it.

Just a Notion

Hi, not much new right now. Have to wait 'till the next week to get my hand at the needed pictures. Will be working more on the ideas during the weekend and so will have more to present. ;)

Basically, the next project will be about textile art. It's about thinking the relation between the idea I had of 'north' before ever visiting here in Lapland, like all those strange dreams in which there were these collage-like landscapes made of pieces of clothe and cotton clouds and the dark blue velvety sky and distant figures of animals and people moving in it, and then again the 'real north' I discovered when moving here. Then there'll be other things added, but about those later on with some images...
